We are excited to announce that applications for the 2025 Cohort are now open! The application period will close on January 2, 2025. We encourage all members to refer at least one potential applicant to join the next cohort.
This year, we are also proud to introduce our new Fellowship Program. This initiative aims to support individuals who wish to join our community but face financial challenges. Selected CINGS fellows will have their membership fees waived. Funding for the Fellowship Program will come from contributions by current members. To maintain transparency, there will be a 3-day internal announcement period during which members can review the selected fellows and raise any objections, provided there is sufficient evidence to support their claims.
Eligibility Criteria:
• Must be pursuing or have recently completed an academic program.
• Currently working in an impact-driven field (such as public service, research, non-profits, journalism or media).
• Experiencing temporary financial difficulties due to career changes, family circumstances, or unforeseen events.
Sharing is Caring!
Please share our application post or form within your network. If you know of any potential applicants who would like to get connected before submitting an application, our doors are always open!

Meanwhile our China-based cohort…
On October 14, the China Institute hosted an official event at the Changan Club in Beijing, organized by the 2005 committee of the Western Returned Scholars Association. The delegation from the China Institute included Chair of the Trustee Board Yue-Sai Kan , Vice Chair Sophia Sheng, CEO George Geh, Trustees Shau Zhang, Vincent Mo, and Yang Lan (who also chairs the 2005 committee), as well as China Representative Frances Sun.
From left to right, CINGS Member Pablo Meng, Crysti Chen, Grace Zhang, China Institute’s China Representative Frances Sun, China Institute CEO George Geh, CINGS China Head David Chen, CINGS Partnership Committee VP Andre Shen (and a mysterious 2005 committee member that we don’t recognize).
This event was an excellent opportunity for our CINGS next-gen leaders to engage with trustees of the China Institute, exchange ideas on enhancing US-China people-to-people relations, and attend two compelling panels featuring top practitioners in the fields of economics, education, culture, sports, and more.

As always, we encourage members in China to propose and organize events leveraging the CINGS platform. A special shout-out goes to Roro Zhou for coordinating the Chengdu/Deota CINGS members’ retreat this summer and to Andre Shen for successfully organizing the 3rd Global Development and Health Communication Forum at Tsinghua University, which was attended by four of our members in China!
Bridging Voices: A Collaborative Roundtable for Change
On 21st November 7:30pm-9pm ET/ 8.30am-10am CST, CINGS and NZCC (New Zealand China Council) will co-host an online dialogue focusing on how US-China relations impact the next generation living in these countries (US, China and New Zealand).
Whether you have Chinese heritage, connections to China, or have never been there, as a young professional and emerging leader in your community, China is a topic you can't easily ignore. Its scale and growing influence in the global economy and geopolitics present both opportunities and challenges. For many Chinese Americans and Kiwis, there might be a persistent question: 'Should I go back to China?' For others, perspectives on China may shape your career development and impact your future decisions.
We will discuss how “China” impact Next Gen’s life in the place they live in, in terms of history, development, its relationship with the place we live in, opportunities and challenges it brings, and its future.
About the NZCC…
The New Zealand China Council is a New Zealand-led, New Zealand-funded organisation which acts as a cross-sector, peak body for the New Zealand-China relationship. The Council was established in 2012 as part of the New Zealand Government’s NZ Inc Strategy for China. The Council’s unique value proposition is to bring together a high-level influential group of key players to engage on the relationship. You can check their mission here:

Giving Circle: Preparing for 2025
Recently we announced that we have successfully completed this year’s Giving Circle round. We selected two organizations, each to be awarded $10,000 USD.
The GC is finishing the last stages of confirming and disbursing funds to grantees. Once this has been done, we'll have an exciting all-member update and a preview of GC programming for 2025.
COSMISM: The Ultimate Sonic Experience
On the left, Chamberlain Zhang and on the right Alex Zhang Hungtai playing at our first COSMISM event on 10th October at China Institute Venue.
COSMISM is a monthly performance event series of live music organized by CINGS. Curated by Chamberlain Zhang, a CINGS member, this event creates a transformative sonic experience featuring emerging artists and performers living and visiting New York rooted in Asian heritage. COSMISM aims to be an ongoing social experiment, developing a communal intention of listening and transforming, giving shape to our community in which everyone contributes in their own way.
The performance is introduced by curators or intellectuals who specializes in theories or practices of performance and contemporary art, followed by an interview with the artist. Usually, after the events, a reception of light foods and drinks follows to foster a sense of community.
The next event will take place on 25th November 7-9pm always at China Institute in America in New York. This time, the collaboration will be with Shayna and Nava Dunkelman, musicians and percussionists currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
Let’s get to know the artists… After spending years apart working on their own unique voices, they came together in 2018 to form NOMON.
Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan to an Indonesian mother and an American father, the sisters became multi-instrumentalists performing alongside their mother, a musician and composer active in Asia and the Middle East.
They are strongly drawn to the dance-like movements and flow of playing percussion. It is as visual as it is aural. The trajectory of the hands and sticks, the shift of body weight, the eyes aiming to strike - The physicality of the performance has a choreographic quality as it is. The body follows a sequence of movements when immersed in playing the array of percussive instruments surrounding it.
The music lives in the intersection of electronic soundscapes and intricately composed percussion parts. They combine drum machines, vocal samples, synth melodies and modular synthesizers triggered by analog sensors with carefully chosen percussion sounds to create a cohesive interweaving of the electronic and acoustic elements. The seamless blend of the two worlds is essential to their music.
When composing, they are inspired by industrial music, avant-garde percussion improvisation, rhythms and sounds from their cultural background (Japan and Indonesia) and contemporary electronic music that incorporates voices instrumentally.
In addition to solo performances, Shayna toured with Pulitzer Award-Winning and Grammy-nominated composer Du Yun, Balún, Ali Sethi, Grammy Award-winning ensemble Attacca Quartet among others. Nava is a member of electro-percussion experimental noise duo IMA, and has performed or collaborated with Fred Frith, John Zorn, William Winant, Ikue Mori, Brandon Seabrook, Angélica Negrón, Pauchi Sasaki, and gabby fluke-mogul and many others.
You don’t want to miss this out!
